The School of Architecture Network is comprised of a mixed wireless and wired environment. The wireless environment is currently in its infancy and located only on the east end-of floor two. Wireless technology will be fully implemented by Fall 2003 and will consist of approximately 25 wireless access points strategically placed to provide full and non-congestive internet access to all students. The wireless project will support the newest technology using 802.11a protocols. By Fall 2003 all students who bring computers into Marvin Hall studios will be required to purchase a wireless network card. The wired environment saw a big leap in the summer of 2001 with the move to a 100BaseTx full-duplex switched infrastructure. Currently we are evaluating the next steps in networking infrastructure that will keep us in the forefront of networking technology.
Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi = wireless fidelity (Learn More)
Wireless technology has been introduced into the network infrastructure at Marvin Hall. This technology will enable freedom in the design studios and network access throughout the building. Driven by the creative design element and ever changing face of the studio environment, we now have the capability for every student to have a computer in studio and each studio desk to be located in a fashion that promotes teamwork as well as individuality. Below are some links to aid you in purchasing a compatible wireless network interface device for use in Marvin Hall.
For Notebook Computers without internal wi-fi device: Notebook Wi-Fi Card For Desktop Computers without wi-fi device: Desktop Wi-Fi Card - PCI Type
Any Wi-Fi certified 802.11a, b, g card will work with our network.
Wireless Security: The University of Kansas requires compliance with measures related to wi-fi security. The School of Architecture employes L2TP over IPSec security principles with LDAP validation for wi-fi network access. |
