Architecture Computer Requirement Policy

Policy on Computer Requirements for the School of Architecture

Rev. 06.27.05

Policy Name:
Architecture Computer Requirement

Policy Purpose: To define the Computing Requirements of Architecture Students

Scope: Students in the Professional Architecture Programs
Definitions:
Studio: The environment in which hands on instruction in Architectural topics is given
Digital Studio: The same as Studio but with an emphasis in digital design
WLAN: The University Wireless LAN
LAN: The University Wired LAN

Policy:
Beginning in the Fall of 1998, by faculty resolution, all third-year students and above in the Professional Architecture Program at the University of Kansas are required to purchase a computer for use in their studio.  While we do not specify that students purchase a computer from a particular vendor we do recommend that students follow a minimum specification checklist for when they make their purchase.  The specifications for architectural computing can be found on the school website in the technology section.  Additionally students can benefit from a collaborative relationship the school enjoys with DELL.  Information on the DELL student initiative can also be found on the school’s website in the technology section.

The school will not service the systems that students buy; however, the school will offer help in diagnostics and assist students who want to learn to fix their own computers.

Connectivity:
The school provides connectivity via the WLAN in all studios in all buildings.  Digital studios held in room 203, 303 and 403 (Marvin Hall) have a regular wired LAN as well.  Students in any studio have access to the school owned computer located in the studio and all server resources except printing which is prohibited by University Policy on the WLAN.

Assistance:
We have informed the Office of Financial Aid at the University of Kansas of this computer purchase requirement for third-year B. Arch students, and we have requested that it be included in calculating financial need.
