Architectural Engineering

Architectural engineering is the study of building systems (such as structures, electrical power and communications, lighting, and air conditioning) with the intention of integrating them with the building's overall architectural design. The Architectural Engineering Program offers the degree of bachelor of science in architectural engineering. This degree is awarded by the School of Engineering, but the related academic program is jointly offered by KU's School of Architecture and Urban Design and the School of Engineering.

Students are admitted to the program by the School of Architecture and Urban Design, and are listed as students of both schools. They take architectural design studio courses alongside architecture students, complete engineering courses with other engineering students, and take courses specifically related to architectural engineering. Fourth and fifth year students typically select an emphasis area: construction management, building structures, building mechanical systems, illumination/electrical, or building acoustics in which to concentrate their studies. The Architectural Engineering Program also offers two graduate degrees.
